Second Chance Are you a youth who has had conflict with the law who, if only given the opportunity, would be eager to turn your life around? Well look no further, because this is your ‘second chance...’
Let CEED’s Second Chance Program show you how to see your future in a whole new light. Learn how to use your skills, talents and abilities to create the successful life you’ve always dreamed of. If you think that society has given up on you, think again. We all fear change, but we are all capable of positive transformation. We offer youth a chance for a different ending. CEED’s Second Chance Program believes that young people are an important reflection and representation of their society. Building character and leadership skills through entrepreneurial training allow the youth who participate in the Second Chance Program to represent their society in a positive as opposed to a negative light. Second Chance is dedicated to guiding each youth through this process step by step. When you have run out of options, having this ‘second chance’ to get your foot in the door can transform your life. In 1998, The Centre for Entrepreneurship Education & Development developed the Second Chance program to give youth the chance for a brand new start. Since then, the program has demonstrated immense success in reaching its goals. Each year, 10-12 participants take part in the program, with more than 90 graduates, some going on to university or community colleges, some achieving full-time employment, others using what they've learned to start a small business. A one-year program, Second Chance uses entrepreneurship models as a tool to assist youth in conflict with the law. The goal is for participants to gain necessary life skills in order to become successful, productive members of society. Second Chance uses the business development and planning approach to teach participants employability skills as well as the value of life planning and goal-setting. Through group projects, Second Chance allows the participants to "give back" to society and address issues of local concern. As participants learn the 'Business of Life,' they will gain employability skills and partake in life planning and goal setting activities. In teams, the participants develop, plan and execute community projects with the goal of making a difference in society. This giving back allows the youth involved in the program the chance to take the focus off of their own lives and make a positive impact on the lives of others. The result is the transformation from someone who may have had a negative influence on society to someone who has an extremely positive influence; an individual who often leaves a significant impact on the lives of others. The program provides support and assistance to youth who are on probation or parole, not attending school and experiencing barriers in their attempts to fully participate in society. Applicants for the program take part in a week-long assessment, allowing facilitators to determine those who are ready for the program. While taking part in Second Chance, youth who've had a rocky start to life go through a personal development process, coming out on the other end with a clear vision and a new beginning.
